I'm Looking for Great Stories about Cooking!
|
|
Years ago, a hope ignited in me to reach people outside of our churches through testimonies of experiencing God while enjoying our everyday lives.
Barbour Publishing materialized this dream by releasing a series of devotionals with me titled, What I Learned from God While .... So far we have released inspiring compilations for Gardeners, Quilters, and Bird Watchers.
In the fall of 2004, Barbour Publishing will produce the fourth title in the series: What I Learned from God While Cooking.
I would love to see your story for possible inclusion in this new devotional.

Here's what we need:
In 350 words or less, share a personal experience story that involves something you learned while cooking. Show the reader what was happening in your life (and kitchen) when the truth of God's scriptural principles was revealed to you, or when God spoke to you in some way. Then share the fruit of what happened when you followed (or rejected) God's leading.
Be creative; use dialogue, essay, or your favorite storytelling technique to show readers how to enjoy God's presence--even in the kitchen.

General guidelines
Each contribution should include:
· A Story Title
· Your name (spelled as you would like to see it in print)
· A Scripture relevant to your story
· A 350-word story (This word count does not include the
Scripture, prayer, recipe, or tip.)
· A prayer (No longer than two or three sentences, which
reflects the point of the lesson)
· A recipe: Perhaps the one in your story, but not
absolutely necessary. Be sure to test your recipe
exactly as you have written it. There may be something
that you always do that isn't written down. I WILL NOT
be testing the recipes in the book.(But I will give
people your email address if they write to say the
recipe didn't work!) Fair deal? :-D
· A kitchen tip: Perhaps relevant to the recipe you are
giving, such as: Put your bowl and beaters in the
freezer for a few minutes before beating egg whites.
· Author Bio: Two or three sentences about yourself that you
would like for readers to know.
· Your email, mailing address, and phone number for my
contact purposes (not for publication, unless you put
it in your bio).

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. When is my story due?
A. I will accept stories through June 15, 2004.
Q. Does the devo have to be 350 words, or is there a range (250-350 for example)? How exact do I need to be?
A. The story can be less than 350 words, but if it's more than a few words over I will ask you to edit it.
Q. Can I submit more than one story? Will more than one devotion from each author be accepted?
A. At first I will select one story per contributor. If more stories are needed I will send an announcement to request more.
Q. What rights are you requesting?
A. We're requesting first rights, which means that it's an original story that hasn't been previously in print. However, once the book is in print you can offer your specific work to other publications that are not similar in appearance, design, or format to this work.
Q. When will I know for sure that my story will be included in the book?
A. The publisher has the final right to cut stories or add pages. Once the publisher approves of the submissions, I will send a permission slip for you to sign and return to me.
Q. What will I get for being a contributor?
A. Upon acceptance and publication of your contribution, a free copy of the book will be sent to you. You may purchase additional copies from the Publisher at a contributor's discount for personal use and sales through your booktable or mailing lists, but not for resale to the wholesale or retail trade bookstores. If you speak or minister at church events, this is a great way to add product to your book table.
Q. How should I send the my story to you?
A. Please attach a Word document to your email, or if your server restricts attachments, then copy and paste your submission into the message of the email. I prefer to have electronic submissions. If you have to mail your article, then send a floppy disk with all the points included above.
